What is IOP?
Intensive outpatient programming (IOP) is a structured, evidence-based level of behavioral healthcare designed for people who need more support than traditional weekly therapy, but don’t require 24/7 residential or inpatient care. At Charlie Health, our virtual IOP for eating disorders provides personalized treatment for anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and other eating disorders. By combining group, individual, family sessions, plus nutritional counseling for clients with a primary eating disorder diagnosis, our program helps people build the tools they need for lasting recovery while continuing to live at home and maintain their daily routines.
Whether someone is stepping down from residential or inpatient treatment or realizing that weekly therapy isn’t enough, Charlie Health’s virtual IOP for eating disorders offers a path to lasting recovery, meaningful connection, and real progress.
Curated groups
Bringing people with similar challenges, diagnoses, and lived experiences together fosters connection and combats the isolation often felt with eating disorders. Group sessions provide peer support and a safe space to learn and practice coping skills.
Individual therapy
One-on-one connections are critical. Each client’s treatment plan includes weekly individual sessions with a primary therapist who specializes in eating disorders to address body image issues, disordered eating behaviors, underlying emotional challenges, and co-occurring mental health conditions.
Family therapy
Family support is a key part of eating disorder recovery. Each client’s treatment plan includes weekly family therapy sessions to help families and loved ones better understand eating disorders, improve communication around food and body image, and create a more supportive home environment for healing.
Nutrition Counseling
For clients in our primary eating disorder treatment program, registered dietitians help them develop healthy eating habits, create balanced meal plans, correct misconceptions about food, and actively restore the physical health that’s essential for recovery.

How do I know if Charlie Health’s virtual IOP is right for me or my loved one?
Our primary treatment offering – virtual Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) – is an appropriate level of care for those who need more than once-weekly therapy or are transitioning from inpatient or residential care. It’s designed for those who can live at home but require intensive, structured treatment to manage their eating disorder and work towards recovery. Contact our Admissions team to discuss your specific situation.
While typical outpatient treatment involves one therapy session per week, our virtual IOP offers multiple hours of treatment per week. At Charlie Health, each client receives a customized treatment plan that includes three group sessions per week, one individual therapy session per week, and one family therapy session per week. We also offer psychiatric services and nutrition counseling as needed.
Different therapy modalities are used throughout sessions, creating a truly comprehensive treatment program.
How long is the program?
Our program typically lasts 9-12 weeks; your exact discharge date will depend on your overall treatment progress. Your Primary Therapist will help determine the best discharge date for your needs. View a sample schedule and learn more about how it works here!
