Virtual medication-assisted treatment at Charlie Health

What is virtual medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?

Virtual MAT is an evidence-based option you can choose as part of your recovery. MAT combines FDA-approved medications like Suboxone or Naltrexone with ongoing therapy to reduce cravings, ease withdrawal symptoms, and support long-term healing.

At Charlie Health, MAT is offered in select states* as an optional add-on to your virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). If MAT is right for you, it becomes part of a personalized plan that also includes group therapy, individual sessions, and family support.

Curated groups

By bringing together clients of similar ages who are experiencing similar substance use challenges, we create groups where you can build connections that foster long-term healing and spark breakthroughs. If you add MAT to your care plan, it works alongside these groups to support both physical stabilization and emotional recovery.

Individual therapy

One-on-one connections are critical to the IOP model, which is why each person’s recovery plan includes weekly sessions with a primary therapist skilled in treating substance use disorders.

Family therapy

Family therapy is an optional part of our virtual IOP. For clients who choose it, sessions focus on improving communication, building coping skills, and creating a more supportive home environment during and after recovery.

How does virtual medication-assisted treatment (MAT) work at Charlie Health?

At Charlie Health, MAT is an optional service you can add to your personalized care plan. It combines FDA-approved medications, like Suboxone or Naltrexone, with our hallmark virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

When MAT is included, you’ll continue with the standard IOP model—9–12 hours per week of curated SUD groups and individual therapy—with the option to add family therapy and psychiatric care as needed. MAT works alongside these services to reduce cravings, manage withdrawal, and support long-term recovery.

Our goal is to help you heal from substance use challenges and rediscover hope. If you or a person in your life could benefit from Charlie Health, please contact our Admissions Team to get started in as little as 24 hours.

What are the benefits of a virtual MAT program?

1. Treats multiple conditions

Virtual IOP with MAT can address substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, OCD, mood disorders, and more.

2. Offers evidence-based care

Clients benefit from proven treatment modalities such as CBT, DBT, CFT, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and family therapy, and more, all tailored to substance use recovery.

3. Centers group connection

Healing happens in small, supportive groups where you can share experiences, practice coping skills, and build connections that strengthen recovery.

4. Accessible and flexible

With virtual sessions offered during the day, evenings, and weekends, you can continue work or school while receiving comprehensive, personalized care.

How do I know if Charlie Health’s virtual IOP with MAT is right for me or my loved one?

Our virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with MAT is an appropriate level of care for people who need more than once-weekly therapy and medication to cope with SUD and other serious mental health conditions. Many of our clients have either recently discharged from a higher level of care (e.g., residential, inpatient, emergency room, detox program) or are seeking more support than traditional weekly talk therapy (outpatient). Our program offers both initiation and maintenance of FDA-approved prescriptions to treat SUD. The program combines these medications with therapy to address cravings and withdrawal symptoms while supporting overall recovery.

While typical outpatient treatment involves one therapy session per week, our virtual IOP with MAT offers multiple hours of treatment per week. At Charlie Health, each client receives a customized treatment plan that includes three group sessions per week, one individual therapy session per week, and one family therapy session per week. Our MAT program also includes weekly psychiatry meetings to receive needed medication and review drug screens.

Different therapy modalities are used throughout sessions, creating a truly comprehensive treatment program.

Does Charlie Health accept insurance?

Yes — Charlie Health’s virtual MAT program and virtual IOP is in-network with
most major insurance providers including commercial plans and Medicaid (in states where IOP is covered). Please contact our Admissions Team to learn more about your plan’s specific coverage, or check out our Insurance page.
