Suicide Awareness Resources for Teens & Young Adults

Suicide prevention starts with keeping the lines of conversation open around mental health, as well as watching for signs that someone needs help.

Teen & young adult suicide awareness

Suicide is a public health issue that is especially prominent among teens and young adults. Sadly, it is the second leading cause of death among individuals who are 15 to 24 years old. However, many identifiable risk factors can help determine who is at higher risk. These include a family history of suicide, previous attempts, substance abuse, access to lethal means, serious medical illness, trauma or abuse, and high levels of stress.

There are also some gender differences to be aware of. Females are more likely to attempt, suicide, while males are more likely to die by suicide. Focusing on professional mental health care can help reduce the risk of suicide and help teens and young adults overcome any co-existing conditions that may contribute to these factors.

Teen & young adult suicide awareness and treatment

Several protective factors can help reduce the risk of suicide, such as improved communication and conflict resolution skills, access to mental health care services and clinical interventions, and family and community support.

However, none of these practices should be undertaken alone. If someone you know is showing warning signs of suicide, please reach out for professional help. And if you have an acute crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or dial 911.
