What are club drugs?
Club drugs are a group of substances commonly used at parties, concerts, and nightclubs, including MDMA (ecstasy or molly), ketamine, GHB, synthetic cannabinoids, LSD, and mushrooms. These drugs aren't chemically similar, but they're grouped together because of how and where they're typically used: often in social settings meant to enhance connection, energy, or sensory experience.
Club drug use rarely involves just one substance, and mixing with alcohol makes the risks harder to predict. What starts as occasional use can turn into a pattern that's difficult to stop, especially when someone begins relying on these substances to feel comfortable or connected socially. Not all club drugs carry the same risk of physical addiction, but psychological dependence and escalating use are real risks across the category. If you think you or someone you love might be struggling with club drug use, we can help.
How is club drug use and addiction treated?
Because club drugs vary so much pharmacologically, treatment focuses less on medication for any one substance and more on understanding the underlying pattern — why someone keeps returning to these experiences, and what’s driving the reliance on them. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing can help identify triggers, address any co-occurring anxiety or social difficulties, and build healthier coping strategies that don’t depend on substance use.
At Charlie Health, our licensed Clinical Team builds a personalized plan for each client, combining individual therapy, group sessions, and peer support to address club drug use and any co-occurring mental health concerns.
58%
of clients in our substance use disorder program reported a decrease in substance use at discharge.
What to look for
What are the signs and symptoms of club drug use and addiction?
Signs can look different depending on the substance, but a few patterns tend to show up across the category.
Behavioral
- Using club drugs more often or in larger amounts than intended
- Needing to be under the influence to feel comfortable in social settings
- Continuing to use despite it interfering with work, school, or relationships
- Seeking out parties, clubs, or events primarily to use
Physical
- Dehydration, overheating, or exhaustion after use
- Needing more of a substance over time to feel the same effect
- Withdrawal symptoms like tremors, anxiety, and elevated heart rate when not using (GHB specifically)
Emotional and cognitive
- Strong cravings or urges to use, especially in social settings
- Anxiety, low mood, or irritability in the days following use
- Difficulty enjoying social situations without using
If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.
How is club drug use evaluated?
Club drug use is evaluated the same way as other substance use concerns — a licensed clinician asks about history and patterns of use, what's driving it, and how it's affected your daily life, relationships, and health. Because club drug use often involves more than one substance, clinicians typically assess for polysubstance use and any co-occurring mental health conditions as part of the same evaluation.
At Charlie Health, a Clinical Admissions Therapist conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand your history with club drug use, any co-occurring mental health conditions, and what kind of support would help most — before building a treatment plan made for you.
