What is cannabis use disorder?

Many people assume marijuana isn't addictive — but cannabis use disorder (CUD) is a legitimate, diagnosable condition defined in the DSM-5. Also known as marijuana addiction or weed addiction, CUD happens when cannabis use becomes difficult to control, even as it starts to interfere with school, work, relationships, or health. Cannabis can be smoked, vaped, or consumed in the form of edibles, and current products are often far more potent than those available a generation ago, which can increase the risk of developing CUD.

Like other substance use disorders, CUD exists on a spectrum from mild to severe, and is a chronic, treatable condition, not a personal failing. If you think you or someone you love might be struggling with marijuana or weed addiction, we can help.

How is cannabis use disorder treated?

Unlike some substance use disorders, there’s currently no FDA-approved medication for treating cannabis use disorder, so treatment centers on behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing help people understand their patterns of use, build coping skills, and work through the ambivalence that often comes with wanting to cut back but not being sure they’re ready. Peer support can also play an important role in staying motivated and accountable.

At Charlie Health, our licensed Clinical Team builds a personalized plan for each client to address cannabis use disorder and any co-occurring mental health concerns.

58%

of clients in our substance use disorder program reported a decrease in substance use at discharge.

What to look for

What are the signs and symptoms of cannabis use disorder?

Cannabis use disorder symptoms can look different from person to person, but they generally fall into a few categories. CUD ranges from mild to severe and showing more of these signs indicates greater severity.

Behavioral

  • Using cannabis more or for longer than intended
  • Repeated attempts to cut back or stop without success
  • Spending a lot of time obtaining, using, or feeling the after-effects of cannabis
  • Giving up activities once enjoyed in order to use
  • Continuing to use despite it interfering with work, school, or home life

Physical

  • Needing more cannabis over time to feel the same effect
  • Withdrawal symptoms, like irritability, trouble sleeping, or decreased appetite, when not using
  • Lethargy or low energy, especially with frequent use

Emotional and cognitive

  • Strong cravings or urges to use
  • Using cannabis to cope with stress, sadness, or anxiety
  • Continuing to use despite ongoing relationship or social problems
  • Reduced motivation or difficulty concentrating

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.

How is cannabis use disorder diagnosed?

Like many substance use disorders, cannabis use disorder is diagnosed through a clinical evaluation — a licensed clinician will ask about your patterns of use, cravings, and how cannabis has affected your daily life, relationships, and health. Clinicians use cannabis use disorder DSM-5 criteria to guide the diagnosis, and they'll typically ask about your mental health history too, since CUD often occurs alongside other conditions.

At Charlie Health, a Clinical Admissions Therapist conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand your history with cannabis use, any co-occurring mental health conditions, and what kind of support would help most — before building a treatment plan made for you.
