What is gambling addiction?

Gambling addiction, clinically known as gambling disorder, happens when gambling — whether in a casino, online, or through sports betting — becomes difficult to control, even as it leads to financial, relational, or emotional harm. In fact, it's the only behavioral addiction formally recognized in the DSM-5, placed in the same category as substance use disorders because of how similarly it affects the brain.

Sports betting has become an increasingly common way gambling addiction develops, especially since it's become legal and easily accessible through apps in many states. Like substance use disorders, gambling addiction exists on a spectrum from mild to severe, and it's a chronic, treatable condition, not a personal failing or a matter of self-control. If you think you or someone you love might be struggling with gambling, we can help.

How is gambling addiction treated?

Gambling addiction treatment centers on behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps people recognize the thoughts and urges that drive gambling, challenge distorted beliefs about winning, and build healthier ways to cope with stress or boredom. Support groups and peer accountability can also play an important role in sustaining recovery.

At Charlie Health, our licensed Clinical Team builds a personalized plan for each client, combining individual therapy, group sessions, and peer support to address gambling addiction and any co-occurring mental health concerns.

58%

of clients in our substance use disorder program reported a decrease in substance use at discharge.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.

How is gambling addiction diagnosed?

Gambling addiction is diagnosed using DSM-5 criteria — a licensed clinician evaluates your patterns of gambling, thoughts, and behaviors, and a diagnosis requires meeting at least four of nine criteria within a 12-month period. The number of criteria met determines whether it's classified as mild, moderate, or severe.

At Charlie Health, a Clinical Admissions Therapist conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand your history with gambling, any co-occurring mental health conditions, and what kind of support would help most — before building a treatment plan made for you.
