What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a mental health condition characterized by persistent and excessive fear or worry that is disproportionate to actual circumstances, difficult to control, and disruptive to daily life. Unlike everyday worry, which is usually tied to a specific situation, anxiety disorders are chronic and overwhelming.

Anxiety disorders are the most common category of mental health conditions in the United States. The DSM-5 recognizes several distinct types, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, separation anxiety disorder, and agoraphobia. If you're navigating an anxiety disorder, you're far from alone, and we're here to help

How is anxiety treated?

Anxiety is typically treated with a combination of therapy, skills building, and medication when appropriate. The right approach depends on the type of anxiety and the person. At Charlie Health, each client gets the personalized care they need to understand and manage anxiety symptoms.

Using data from thousands of past clients, we match each new client with the right therapist, peer group, and care plan. Group sessions bring together clients of similar age facing similar challenges, creating space for shared experience alongside clinical care. Individual therapy gives every client dedicated one-on-one time with a licensed Primary Therapist who draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), relational therapy, and other evidence-based approaches to help them navigate their anxiety. Family therapy and psychiatric care are available based on each client’s needs, all coordinated by one care team.

90%

of clients who reported moderate to severe anxiety at intake saw improvements in anxiety symptoms at discharge.

How is anxiety diagnosed?

If you think you might have an anxiety disorder, the first step is talking to a licensed mental health professional. They’ll review your symptoms, medical history, and relevant social and environmental factors using the DSM-5 diagnostic framework and may use standardized screening tools like the GAD-7 to assess severity. A thorough evaluation looks at the full picture — including whether co-occurring conditions like depression, OCD, or ADHD might be playing a role. At Charlie Health, our Clinical Admissions Therapists conduct a comprehensive assessment to evaluate symptoms and determine the right level of care.
