What is neurodivergence?

Neurodivergence is an umbrella term for neurological development that diverges from typical neurological development. It encompasses many different conditions, each with its own profile of strengths, differences, and challenges. The term is used in contemporary discussions to acknowledge neurological differences as a natural part of human diversity.

Many people identify as neurodivergent without a formal diagnosis. The most commonly recognized forms include:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) — affects social communication and sensory processing
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) — involves differences in attention, impulse control, and activity level
  • Dyslexia — a difference in language processing that affects reading and writing
  • Dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder) — affects motor coordination and planning
  • Tourette syndrome and tic disorders — involve involuntary movements or sounds

How does Charlie Health support neurodivergent clients?

At Charlie Health, our approach is to affirm neurodivergence and treat the mental health challenges that can come with it. Our licensed Clinical Team provides mental healthcare for neurodivergent kids, teens, and adults through individual therapy and group sessions, with family therapy and psychiatry also available.

Care focuses on the mental health conditions that often accompany neurodivergence — anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-harm. Clients can join dedicated peer groups for neurodivergent members, creating space to connect with others who share similar experiences. Every client is also paired with a Primary Therapist who leads their individual sessions and shapes treatment around how they think and process.

85%

of clients in our Neurodivergent cohort who reported moderate to severe depression at intake saw improvements in depression symptoms at discharge

What to look for

Mental health and neurodivergence

Being neurodivergent is not the same as having a mental health condition — but neurodivergent people do face significantly elevated rates of co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, and trauma, often compounded by the stress of navigating a world not designed for them. The following reflect common mental health experiences associated with neurodivergence.

Cognitive

  • Differences in executive function — planning, organization, task initiation, and follow-through
  • Sensory overwhelm or hypersensitivity leading to cognitive overload
  • Negative self-beliefs and internalized shame, often from years of being told something is wrong

Emotional

  • Anxiety, frequently tied to social situations, sensory environments, or unpredictability
  • Depression, particularly in those who have spent years suppressing their neurodivergent traits
  • Emotional dysregulation — intense emotional responses that feel difficult to modulate
  • Burnout — exhaustion from sustained effort to function in neurotypical environments

Behavioral

  • Social withdrawal or difficulty sustaining relationships
  • Avoidance of environments or situations that trigger sensory or cognitive overwhelm
  • Masking — suppressing natural neurodivergent behaviors to fit in, at significant personal cost
