What are personality disorders?

Personality disorders are mental health conditions marked by deeply ingrained, rigid patterns in how a person thinks, feels, relates to others, and sees themselves — patterns that show up consistently across situations and cause significant distress. The DSM-5 recognizes 10 distinct types organized into three clusters, with borderline personality disorder (BPD) among the most prevalent and most extensively researched.

These patterns typically emerge in adolescence or early adulthood and tend to persist over time without treatment, though evidence-based therapies can lead to meaningful, lasting change.

How does Charlie Health treat personality disorders?

Personality disorders require more than symptom management. Treatment needs to address the underlying patterns that shape how a person thinks, feels, and connects with others. Charlie Health’s licensed Clinical Team treats personality disorders through individual therapy and group sessions, with family therapy and psychiatry available when clinically indicated.

For many people living with personality disorders, having a reliable, consistent person in their corner makes a real difference. At Charlie Health, every client is paired with a Primary Therapist who provides a trustworthy therapeutic relationship. Group sessions offer something equally important: the chance to practice relating to others in a safe, supportive environment.

How are personality disorders diagnosed?

If you're experiencing symptoms that might be related to a personality disorder, the first step is talking to a licensed mental health professional. A clinical evaluation typically involves a comprehensive interview and review of personal history — looking at whether patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating have been persistent across multiple areas of life and traceable back to at least adolescence or early adulthood.

Because personality disorder symptoms overlap significantly with other conditions — including mood disorders, trauma, and anxiety — accurate diagnosis requires careful evaluation of the full clinical picture. Many people with personality disorders are initially diagnosed with other conditions before an accurate diagnosis is reached. At Charlie Health, our Clinical Admissions Therapists conduct a comprehensive assessment to evaluate symptoms and determine the right level of care.
