What is kratom addiction?

Kratom addiction is a pattern of kratom use that becomes difficult to control, causing physical dependence and withdrawal similar to opioid addiction. Kratom is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, and its leaves are often sold as a natural supplement in the form of powders, capsules, or teas. Despite being marketed as a natural alternative, kratom is addictive. Its active compounds bind to the same opioid receptors in the brain as prescription opioids, which means kratom is functionally an opioid, even though it's legal and sold over the counter in most U.S. states.

Regular use can lead to increased tolerance, physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms similar to those seen with other opioids. Like other substance use disorders, kratom addiction is a chronic, treatable condition, not a personal failing. If you think you or someone you love might be struggling with kratom use, we can help.

How is kratom addiction treated?

Because kratom acts on the same brain receptors as opioids, kratom addiction is often treated similarly to opioid use disorder — with a combination of behavioral therapy and, in some cases, medication to ease withdrawal and cravings. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing can help people understand their patterns of use and build healthier coping strategies.

At Charlie Health, our licensed Clinical Team builds a personalized plan for each client. Our virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed for people who are medically stable, meaning they’ve already completed detox or withdrawal. For more information on treatment approaches, visit our opioid use disorder page or connect with our Admissions Team.

58%

of clients in our substance use disorder program reported a decrease in substance use at discharge.

How is kratom addiction diagnosed?

Kratom addiction is diagnosed the same way as other substance use disorders — a licensed clinician evaluates your patterns of use, cravings, and how it's affected your daily life, relationships, and health, using DSM-5 criteria to guide the diagnosis.

At Charlie Health, a Clinical Admissions Therapist conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand your history with kratom use, any co-occurring mental health conditions, and what kind of support would help most — before building a treatment plan made for you.
